People & Spaces is an interior design studio based in Bristol, led by Emilie Heinonen.

We specialise in creating spaces that are not only functional but also deeply narrative, merging the practical with the poetic. Our philosophy is rooted in humanistic design, where every space is crafted with the belief that good design can improve lives, promote wellbeing, and inspire creativity.

At People & Spaces, we bridge the gap between architecture and interior design, ensuring that every project is considered from both the macro perspective of space and function and the micro details of aesthetics and materials. We prioritise a deeply personal approach, placing the client at the centre of our process. This forms the foundation of our work and drives everything we do.

We believe that truly understanding the people who inhabit a space is paramount. Our people-centred approach goes beyond aesthetics to create environments that reflect each client’s unique story, needs and aspirations.

By prioritising authenticity and soul, we create spaces that resonate to our clients on a profound, emotional level. At the same time, our focus on thoughtful, practical design ensures that these spaces enhance daily life, improving how our clients live and work.

Our design process is key to delivering exceptional results. Bringing extensive experience in architecture and interior design, we blend creative thinking, strategic planning, and hands-on execution, guiding our clients through every step—from meticulous layout planning to hand-selecting the finishing touches.

Our deep expertise in materials and finishes, combined with our network of trusted suppliers, ensures a smooth, efficient process with an unwavering focus on quality and detail. Through clear communication and carefully-executed design, we help clients express their vision and create spaces that are both beautiful and functional.

Place

A strong sense of place guides our design philosophy. We are deeply aware of the context in which we work, always considering the environment—both built and natural. Whether working on a historic building or a modern home, we respect the architecture and context, ensuring our designs are in dialogue with the space's history. We also aim to connect the interior with the exterior, creating harmony between the inside and outside worlds.

We are committed to sustainable design practices, selecting materials that are both beautiful and environmentally responsible. Our goal is to create spaces that have a lasting positive impact on the people who inhabit them and the environment around them.

Our Founder

Emilie Heinonen at home in Bristol, interior designer and People and Spaces founder

Emilie Heinonen has always been fascinated by how people interact with the spaces around them. With 25 years of experience in architectural and interior design across London, Sydney, and Helsinki, Emilie brings a wealth of knowledge and a distinctive perspective to every project.

Her extensive work on public, residential, and commercial projects has given her a profound understanding of how design impacts daily life, making her particularly attuned to the functional and emotional needs of her clients.

Emilie draws from a diverse array of sources, including colour, world art, literature, and modernist furniture and architecture. She is equally influenced by the timeless elegance of Georgian design and the minimalist beauty of Moroccan interiors. This eclectic blend infuses her work with a unique richness.

Her work is characterised by a commitment to creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also liveable, with a strong emphasis on functionality, comfort, and the human experience.
